Tip 1

Offer a warm greeting — a simple smile can go a long way.

A warm smile or friendly “hello” can go a long way, especially to someone who’s feeling invisible or alone. For people experiencing homelessness, that small moment of kindness can remind them that they’re seen and that they matter.

Studies show that smiling triggers the release of mood-enhancing hormones like endorphins and serotonin, while simultaneously reducing stress-related hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. This hormonal shift not only elevates mood but also lowers blood pressure and heart rate, contributing to a person’s emotional and physical health. (Source: Walden University)

All forms of human connection can lift a person’s spirits and spark a sense of belonging—ultimately reflecting the love Jesus has for them. When more of us take the time to show kindness, we build stronger, more compassionate communities where everyone is valued.

In the words of Jesus

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

– Matthew 25:40

Tip 2

Make your own Hope Kit.

Providing a Hope Kit to someone experiencing homelessness offers immediate relief and conveys compassion and respect. These kits can include essential items such as:

  • THESS® BAR: Thess Bar is thoughtfully crafted by food scientists for those facing food insecurity and homelessness. Packed with 20 vitamins and minerals, THESS BAR supports healthy immunity and nutritional essentials for those who so often subsist on insufficient food sources. THESS BAR packaging also includes a QR code that links to a video message of hope for the person experiencing homelessness.
  • Hygiene products: Soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, and deodorant help maintain personal cleanliness, which is vital for health and self-esteem.
  • Clothing essentials: Socks, gloves, hats and gently used jackets can provide warmth and protection against the elements.
  • Water.
  • Seasonal items: Sunscreen in summer or hand warmers in winter can address weather-specific needs.

Items like these can assist with daily comfort, health, and humanity. Creating your own kits to keep in your car is a small way to share hope.

In the words of Jesus

“For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink.”

– Matthew 25:35

Tip 3

Point people to local resources like shelters and food banks.

Sometimes the most meaningful help we can offer is to point someone in the right direction. Sharing information about local shelters, food banks, or support services can open a door to hope, safety, and stability.

Studies show that access to basic resources like shelter and meals can significantly improve a person’s physical and mental well-being. Even if you can’t provide direct assistance, sharing information about these resources can be a crucial first step toward meaningful change. (Source LA Regional Food Bank)

A helpful tip is to create a new contact or note on your smart phone labeled Community Resources where you can store important links and phone numbers for easy access. That way, when you meet someone in need, you’ll have life-saving info at your fingertips. This small step turns your phone into a tool of compassion. You may not always be able to offer food or shelter, but you can point someone toward hope. This simple tip can inspire a life-changing difference.

In the words of Jesus

“For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink.”

– Matthew 25:35

Tip 4

Volunteer your time

Getting involved, whether by volunteering your time or speaking up for policies that tackle the root causes of homelessness, can make a lasting difference. Local shelters and nonprofits often rely on volunteers to provide meals, sort donations, or simply show up with compassion. While hands-on help matters, so does using your voice. Advocating for affordable housing, mental health support, and job programs helps create long-term solutions. Every action, big or small, brings us one step closer to a community where everyone has a place to call home.

Below, find a handful of links that can connect you to volunteer projects in your area:

In the words of Jesus

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

– Matthew 5:16

Tip 5

Give Cheerfully

Choose to share some of the blessings you have received to be a light in someone else’s life. When you give financially to the HIS EYES Foundation, 100% of your gift goes to carefully vetted organizations on the frontlines of gospel-centered care. Your generosity today means someone’s life can be impacted tomorrow. You play an essential role in providing hope for hopeless people and ending the cycle of homelessness in our community.

In the words of Jesus

“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full- pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap.”

– Luke 6:38
