On a single night in January 2024, approximately 771,480 people were experiencing homelessness in the U.S.— an 18.1% increase over the previous year, and the highest number recorded since national data collection began in 2007. 1,2

From 2019-2023, the number of people who entered emergency shelter for the first time increased by more than 23%. 2
Lack of church ties increases risk of homelessness
With “weak social ties, people are more likely to become homeless.” A study that found “the lifetime incidence of homelessness is reduced by 60% for individuals with strong ties to family, religious communities, and friends.” 3
Seven States Carry the Burden of the Crisis
Just seven states (California, New York, Florida, Washington, Texas, Oregon, and Massachusetts) account for 63% of the homeless population.4
Unsheltered Individuals
In 2023, over 256,000 people were unsheltered, representing 39.3% of all individuals experiencing homelessness. 1,2
Aging Into Homelessness
1 in 5 people experiencing homelessness are 55 and older, nearly half are unsheltered.5
From Foster Care to Homelessness
Nearly one-third of homeless youth come from foster care. To end homelessness, we must close system gaps and provide stronger support that builds lasting housing stability and prevents repeat cycles.6
